This is the Festival’s way of joining Rijeka’s program, and especially the program direction of twenty-seven neighbourhoods, for the upcoming year when the city of Rijeka will be the European Capital of Culture. The Festival will bring together performers, groups, and institutions that can contribute with their proximity and cultural offering to the visibility of the area in an international context, as well as present, through festival performances and supplemental programs, exhibitions, workshops, and discussion panels, lesser known convergence points of various cultural influences and connections with urban centers that have been greatly influenced by the historic roads such as Karolina, Jozefina, Lujzijana, and Rudolfina. The Festival will include folklore groups and individuals representing the varieties of Croatian ethnographic heritage, representatives of ethnic minorities, Croats from neighboring countries and diaspora (a total of forty groups) and fifteen ensembles and individuals representing the heritage of other nations and cultures. The main program takes place over five days (July 17 – 21, 2019) and consists of staged shows on two main stages (Gradec and the Jelačić Square), dance workshops, folk theatre plays, the world music concert Ethno Croatia – Ethno on the road by Croatian Musical Youth and a concert of Croatian pilgrimage and Marian hymns in the church of St. Catherine. A formal event broadcast on TV is going to be held on Friday, July 19, 2019 on the Gradec stage starting at 9 p.m. Gradec will also host the programs for the following two days. Apart from the main stages of Gradec and the Jelačić Square, there will be supplemental programs taking place in streets and squares of Zagreb city center, as well as in Novi Zagreb. These locations are: European Square, Zrinjevac Square, Tkalčićeva and Gajeva streets, and on the terrace of the Mamutica building in Travno. Supplemental exhibitions, discussion panels, workshops and concerts announcing the Festival, and also taking place throughout the festival will be held in the Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Etno Art Gallery, Travno Cultural Center, Zagreb Dance Center, Klovićevi dvori Atrium, Zagreb Cathedral, Church of St. Catherine, Church of St. Anthony of Padua, Bogdan Ogrizović Library and Reading Room, Vintage Industrial Bar, Enzita Kitchen Studio at the Zagreb Fair, on the Bundek Summer Stage and the outdoor stages in Zagreb’s surroundings: the Erdödy Castle in Kerestinec, in Vrbovec, Zaprešić, as well as in Beltinci, Slovenia. Since the preservation of cultural heritage is one of the main objectives of the Festival, an exhibition will be put up in the Klovićevi dvori Gallery in collaboration with the Tomislavgrad Cultural Information Center from Bosnia and Herzegovina called Intangible cultural heritage of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the collection of the Monastery of St. Elijah, organized with the support of the Bosnian Ministry of Culture and Sport.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]The exhibits come from the ethnographic collection of the monastery and spiritual center “Carmel of St. Elijah” on Lake Buško near Tomislavgrad. Father Zvonko Martić, prior of the Carmel of St. Elijah on Lake In line with the Festival’s theme, the Department for Preservation, Reconstruction and Lending of Traditional Costumes of the Travno Cultural Center is also preparing an exhibition in the Etno Art Gallery called Along the road towards the sea – traditional clothing along the Karolina and Lujzijana Roads. The exhibition will feature traditional costumes of the areas through which the historical roads pass, as well as the costumes from nearby regions – the Kupa river basin around Karlovac, Žumberak, Gorski Kotar, Lika, Croatian Littoral, and Istria. The exhibition is authored by ethnologists Bojana Poljaković Popović, Ivana Mihajlic and Lucija Halužan. The visible and invisible people of Gorski Kotar along the Lujzijana Road is the theme of the discussion organized in the Bogdan Ogrizović Library and Reading Room hosted by associates from the Institute of Anthropology, as well as dialect experts from the Institute for Croatian Language and Linguistics, Croatian Academy of Science and Arts Linguistic Research Institute and the Faculty of Philosophy, who will present the dialects of Gorski Kotar through a folk play Severinsko ofiranje in the Klovićevi dvori Atrium. The Klovićevi dvori Atrium will also host three concerts announcing the Festival. These are: Habaneras: songs of departures and farewell by musicologist Nena Hauzer and ensemble; Jazz and Istrian Tradition Fusion by Tamara Obrovac Transhistria Ensemble featuring with Dario Marušić; and Sevdalinka, a concert by Damir Imamović (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The latter concert is immediately connected to an exhibition held in the Klovićevi dvori Gallery, and Ante Batinović is going to hold a discussion with Damir Imamović, third generation artist, about his peculiar art a day before the concert at the Vintage Industrial Bar. The Festival continues its successful cooperation with the Bundek Summer stage, where guests from China will perform. The “Choor” Ensemble Beijing, a group of professional Mongolian musicians, will give a concert featuring music from the Mongol Steppe. Street Folk Art is also a part of the Festival program. Spontaneous performances during morning hours beside the Jelačić Square stage will introduce domestic and international performers on the pop up street shows, following the way of promotion of the city, organized by the City of Zagreb Tourist Board. As in previous years, Festival participants and Zagreb’s residents and visitors will also come together in the Zagreb Cathedral during the Sunday Mass for the participants of the Festival, which will be broadcast this year by the Croatian Radio. Apart from the stages within the city, the groups will also perform in the Erdödy Palace in Kerestinec (Sveta Nedelja), on stages in Vrbovec and Zaprešić, as well as in the International Festival in Beltinci, Slovenia, with which our Festival has been collaborating for many years.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

There is also a Crafts and Souvenirs Fair planned in the Jelačić Square during the Festival. For the first time this year, the Festival will present two programs which have resulted from the “Museum in a Pot” project of the Požega City Museum. The project presents the results of ethnologic research into the traditional foods of Slavonia, Baranya, and western Srijem (Syrmia). Jointly organized by Enzita Kitchen Studio, Požega City Museum and the International Folklore Festival, a practical workshop called Traditional Finger Food will be held, as well as a promotion of the Museum in a Pot food project. The programs are prepared throughout the year by Festival associates who visit and work with domestic groups, thus maintaining the continuity of selected theme programs, supporting heritage bearers and the implementation of the UNESCO Convention (2003) on the national level. The program for this year has been developed in collaboration with ethnologists and folklorists, associates from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research, Institute of Anthropology, Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Upper City Highschool, Zagreb Dance Center, Požega City Museum and Enzita Kitchen Studio, numerous field associates, as well as the embassies of visiting ensembles’ countries. The International Folklore Festival Zagreb is organized by the Travno Cultural Center. In April 2019, the Festival became an organizational unit of the Cultural Center, a public cultural institution which has been active in Zagreb at Božidara Magovca 17 since 1972. The Center has organized numerous programs encompassing multiple cultural and educational fields. These include concerts, plays, music and film programs, drama, music, arts, dance, educational and popular workshops, seminars, exhibitions, lectures, courses and the International Puppet Theatre Festival – PIF. The Center also publishes specialized releases related to puppeteering. One of the organizational units of the Travno Cultural Center is the Department for Preservation, Reconstruction and Lending of Traditional Costumes, a specialized organization whose mission is to collect, rent, reconstruct, refurbish, and professionally protect traditional costumes for folklore shows, and various other contemporary applications. They organize educational and cultural programs presenting traditional cultural heritage. The Festival is a certified member of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF) and holds the EFFE Label 2019 – 2020 quality stamp awarded by the European Festivals Association to “remarkable arts festivals showing their engagement in the field of the arts, community involvement and international openness.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”CATALOG 53TH MSF” shape=”square” color=”orange” size=”lg” align=”center” i_align=”right” i_icon_fontawesome=”” button_block=”true” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fmsf.hr%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F05%2FMSF2019_Katalog_160x235_01.pdf|||”][vc_btn title=”PROGRAM 53TH MSF” shape=”square” color=”orange” size=”lg” align=”center” i_align=”right” i_icon_fontawesome=”” button_block=”true” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fmsf.hr%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F05%2FMSF2019_Deplijan_480x210-96x210_02_PRI.pdf|||”][vc_btn title=”PHOTO GALLERY 53TH MSF” shape=”square” color=”orange” size=”lg” align=”center” i_align=”right” i_icon_fontawesome=”” button_block=”true” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2F69495271%40N03%2Falbums%2F72157712041961672|||”][vc_column_text]Dr. sc.
