39TH INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL IN ZAGREB
20 – 24 July, 2005.
39th International Folklore Festival in Zagreb is dedicated to the folklore of northeastern Croatia – Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja, particularly to customs of springtime processions among which, as something distinctive for the region, stand out processions of kraljice (queens). As we find the same or related customs in the neighbouring regions outside of Croatian borders, especially among Croats in Vojvodina, Hungary and northern Bosnia (region of Posavina, along Sava river), corresponding examples, that is, performers from those regions are included in the festival’s programme. To make a picture of the chosen theme more complete we added some other performers from more distant regions and from other countries, so at the Festival customs similar to kraljice are also presented by members of folklore society from south Croatian peninsula of Pelješac (from village Putnikovi ) and by participants from Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Romania.
Besides aforementioned, at the Festival will also participate other performers from Croatia as well as foreign folklore ensembles, smaller groups and
individuals from Egypt, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Germany, Oman, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
Two programme sections are dedicated to the folklore of eastern Croatia and its neighbouring regions: the first groups together performances of kraljice and related customs, and the second rest of springtime processions. Majority of foreign participants appear in a separate programme, with the exception of those participating in the programme of kraljice and other springtime processions.
Since 2005 is declared the women’s year, we have conceived a shorter programme titled “Women and Croatian Traditional Music”. Usual concerts of world music are this year dedicated to Irish music, its contemporary forms and its reflections in our country. At this year’s concert of church folk singing titled “Thou God’s Saint, Chosen!” participate church singers groups from eastern Slavonia. And as it has been a custom for years, we have organized dance and music workshops, a smaller exhibition about kraljice and promotion of CD “Kacic’s Trace”, created during preparations for the last years Festival which was dedicated to the 300th birthday anniversary of friar Andrija Kacic Miošic.
