The Litany of Loreto from two different prayer books from the turn of the 18th and 19th century – one kajkavian, the other ikavian-štokavian – will serve as an example of lexical vitality of Croatian linguistic heritage in modern local vernaculars. The introduction will consist of simultaneous readings of the two historical Litanies of Loreto line by line or invocation by invocation. Then an overview of the genesis, contents, and development of this prayer text will be given within the European and Croatian Christian context. Finally, a systemic linguistic, diachronic and synchronic, as well as social dialectological review of the texts will be offered in relation to the contemporary situation of local Croatian vernaculars.
