53.IFF – 2019 “Fusion of jazz and Istrian tradition”
Sunday, 14. 7. 2019., 21 sat
Klovićevi Dvori Gallery Atrium, Jezuitski trg 4
Interpreting Tamara’s unique music, exceptional musicians from her international Transhistria Ensemble skilfully and naturally fuse contemporary jazz with elements of Istrian and Mediterranean music, creating an incredible ease of expression, characteristic only of the greatest of artists. This outstanding group is famous for its amazing alchemy and almost telepathic understanding among musicians. Their performances are rich in spontaneity, innovative improvisations, freedom, humour and powerful communicativeness. Tamara’s voice is equally effective in singing lyrics as well as in vocalisms when it becomes an instrument of its own. It is precisely this natural coexistence of different musical forms and improvisation typical to this ensemble that definitely establishes Tamara Obrovac as an exceptional artist.
She has created a distinctive musical expression using elements of her own tradition, becoming ever more recognisable and present on the world music scene.
The guest of the concert is Dario Marušić, musician and ethnomusicologist, member of the first Transhistria Ensemble cast since 2000, who tirelessly spreads the awareness of the contemporary value of Istrian traditional musical expression. This music sounds equally new and fresh today, serving as evidence of the superiority of culture over all current problems of humankind. Šurle, mih, sopele or dvojnice may well be sounds from a distant past, but they are also sounds of the future.
