The veterans of the Dugava theater company will present five short plays written by the Croatian folk writer Joška Weidinger (1942-2010) from Gradišće. The titles are Korizmeni aldov, U nedilju po maša, Plea for exemption from military service, Croatian-Croatian language problem and Gumi servis. In addition to dramatic performances, Weidinger’s work will be presented and excerpts from his literary works will be read. The program will talk about the language and culture of the Pinkovo Croats.

The municipality of Pinkovac is located in the south of Gradišće. It has about 800 inhabitants, most of whom are Croats. The village was mentioned for the first time in 1427, and Croats immigrated in the 16th century and have preserved their language and culture to this day. In 1996, the Croatian Motherland of Emigrants awarded Najselo Pinkovac an award for special efforts in the preservation of culture, language and Croatian identity. The purpose of the Dugava society is to promote and preserve the Croatian language and culture of Gradišće. For this purpose, the Society regularly prepares theater plays in the Croatian language with children, young people and adults, and organizes cultural events (e.g. midsummer parties, author’s readings and pre-Christmas events).
